Pamela Wilson-Ryckman - It’s a Big Ocean
February 2 – March 5, 2023
Opening Reception Thursday, February 3rd from 5:30 – 7:30pm.
Gallery Paule Anglim is pleased to present an exhibition of new works by Pamela Wilson-Ryckman, It’s a Big Ocean.
The artist will present new paintings and works on paper-- all works about moments of perception and how (or what and why) we remember. Wilson-Ryckman offers a new dimension in this imagery, a concern to capture the inherent subjectivity and tone of an individual’s experiences of mundane pleasure, of reflection, of cognitive dissonance. She uses to full advantage the fragile watercolor/ ink medium, evoking the fleeting ephemeral character of such moments. She states:
“In their absurdity, their pathos or their tragedy, our memories of such images can become iconic in their banality.”
Pamela Wilson-Ryckman’s painterly language is informed by both modernist abstract painting and the aesthetic sensibilities which characterize early Japanese and Chinese ink painting. Her diaphanous surfaces, thin washes and shifting spaces exploit a dialectic of a fragile and delicately expressive medium coupled to an intense and sometimes disturbing subject.
Pamela Wilson-Ryckman received a MA in Art History, Theory and Criticism from the Art Institute of Chicago, and has exhibited internationally. Her work was featured in the 2006 Seville Biennial and she recently received a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship.
