SIGHT / VISION : The Urban Milieu
SIGHT / VISION : The Urban Milieu
October 9 through November 9, 2022
Reception: Thursday October 10th, 5:30-7:30pm
Gallery Paule Anglim is pleased to announce the sixth presentation of the exhibition “SIGHT / VISION: The Urban Milieu.” Featuring works by Wallace Berman, Joan Brown, Cameron, Bruce Conner, Jean Conner, Jay DeFeo, Wally Hedrick, George Herms, Jess and Lawrence Jordan, this 2013 edition includes painting, sculpture, drawing, collage and film.
The series, the first of which was presented 30 years ago, has been dedicated to the Californian bohemian spirit that evolved post-war. Marginalized by the art world for years, and then later to be known as ‘Beat Generation Artists’, the group shared San Francisco houses, gallery spaces and cross-pollinated ideas with writers, poets and musicians.
With a view to the artists’ response to the decay of inner cities (as destructive urban renewal projects and suburbia were on the rise) the group show displays sculpture and collage made from found junk and old book pages in conversation with drawing and painting. The painters sought an energy (magic), essence and even ribald satire in their works made on different terms than the prevailing Abstract Expressionism of the East Coast.
