SOLID CONCEPT VI
SOLID CONCEPT VI
November 13 through December 21, 2022
Reception: Thursday November 14th, 5:30-7:30pm
Gallery Paule Anglim’s SOLID CONCEPT series pays tribute to San Franciscan artists who, by their explorations beyond conventional art making over the past four decades, have broadened the parameters of the art experience. Artists featured in the SOLID CONCEPT exhibitions presented at Gallery Paule Anglim have been influential guides to other artists experimenting in conceptual art and new media in the Bay Area and beyond.
Terry Fox, David Ireland, Paul Kos, Tony Labat, Tom Marioni, John Roloff and Al Wong are all San Franciscan artists engaged in distilling the motives and focus of their practice. As colleagues, their activity has been driven by critical relevance tempered by a playful sense of adventure. In the late 60’s and early 1970’s social reform brought new ways of addressing politics into the studio: incorporating sound, body movement, Zen practice, personal history while questioning originality, authorship and the value of materials, these California artists were more interested in removing categories than in making new rules. Working as conceptual artists meant different things to each. For the most part, they were no longer drawing, painting and sculpting. Video, film, performance, communication, technology, furniture, hardware and repurposed materials had become favored tools of art.
