“RETROSPECTIVE” - Paule Anglim (1923 -2015)
The staff and artists of Gallery Paule Anglim present “RETROSPECTIVE”, an exhibition in tribute to Paule Anglim and her passionate commitment to artists. The memorial exhibition will bring together artworks from 5 decades of Paule Anglim’s shows and public art projects.
Born and educated in the French Canadian province of Quebec, Paule Anglim came to San Francisco as a young woman with a degree in Sociology and a plan to work with Catholic Social Services. Her life gravitated to the fine arts and architecture, and she began her business Architectural Art Service in the 1960’s. Working with prominent architects she pioneered sculptural commissions by Alexander Calder, Claire Falkenstein, Henry Moore, Isamu Noguchi and others for public sites from Los Angeles to San Francisco, Seattle and Vancouver. In the 1970‘s she opened Gallery Paule Anglim in North Beach, relocating it in 1982 to its present location, 14 Geary, in the center of San Francisco.
She provided an important venue for nationally and internationally known artists, and championed women artists, among them Ida Applebroog, Deborah Butterfield, Louise Bourgeois, Joan Brown, Sue Coe, Jay DeFeo, Ann Hamilton, Lynn Hershman, Mildred Howard, Judith Linhares, Annette Messager, Joan Mitchell, Alice Neel, Gay Outlaw, Clare Rojas, Carolee Schneemann, Jeanne Silverthorne, Frances Stark, Carrie Mae Weems and Hannah Wilke. Her love of painting brought forth a rich stream of beautiful exhibitions and advocacy for Anne Appleby, Robert Bechtle, Christopher Brown, James Brown, Dan Connally, Louise Fishman, Charles Garabedian, David Hannah, Jack Jefferson, John Meyer, Tomas Nakada, Brett Reichman, Milton Resnick, James Rosen, Pamela Wilson-Ryckman, Katherine Sherwood, Hassel Smith, Xiaoze Xie, Robert Yarber and John Zurier. Known for her intuition and risk-taking program, she gave opportunities to new forms and voices like John Beech, Nayland Blake, Dean Byington, Jerome Caja, Carter, Enrique Chagoya, Ala Ebtekar, Vincent Fecteau, Tim Hawkinson, Komar & Melamid, Tony Oursler, J. John Priola, Rigo 23, Dean Smith, Canan Tolon and William Tucker.
Gallery Paule Anglim gained the reputation as a forum for the vanguard of post-war artists historically gathered under the rubric San Francisco Beat. Her gallery produced one-person shows and a series of group called “SIGHT VISION”, featuring Wallace Berman, Bruce Conner, Jean Conner, DeFeo, Wally Hedrick, George Herms, Jess and their circle. A second locus of creativity was the San Francisco Conceptual Art group of artists whose work was gathered regularly in the series of exhibitions “SOLID CONCEPT” including Terry Fox, Howard Fried, Sharon Grace, David Ireland, Paul Kos, Tony Labat, Tom Marioni and Mark Thompson.
A memorial to honor Paule Anglim will be held at the San Francisco Art Institute, Sunday May 31st
