As a complement to its Bruce Conner exhibition, Gallery Paule Anglim is pleased to present a group of selected works by his friends and contemporaries in its Gallery II.  Over the past 20 years the gallery has mounted the Sight Vision series of group shows.  Featuring works by Wallace Berman, Joan Brown, Jean Conner, Jay DeFeo, Wally Hedrick, George Herms, Jess and others, the Sight Vision exhibitions focused on the spirit and special rapport of these California artists.

Later to be known as ‘Beat Generation Artists’, they shared San Francisco houses, exhibition spaces and a bohemian underground of cross-pollinated ideas with writers, poets and musicians.  New practices of fabrication and repurposing of thrown away materials characterized the work.

“I think the assemblage technique comes out of jazz and improvisation.  The jazz musician takes part of a melody from one song, part of a melody from another song, and puts them over these chord changes and makes a musical collage.”  George Herms

Showcased in the Gallery II show will be a cloth and wire construction by Joan Brown, an early painting and two photographs by Jay DeFeo, a Wally Hedrick can sculpture “Small Peak”, a collage from Jean Conner, George Herm’s wooden assemblage “Triple Cross” and other important works. Wallace Berman connected the Bay Area artists to the LA scene.
