Robert Bechtle
Robert Bechtle
October 27 - November 27, 2022
Opening Reception November 4, 5:30 - 7:30pm
Gallery Paule Anglim is pleased to announce its exhibition of new works on paper by Robert Bechtle. The artist will present recent watercolors and charcoal drawings from his San Francisco studio. A fully illustrated catalog with an essay by Robert Storr will accompany the exhibition.
This show, the gallery's seventh presentation of new work over the past twenty years, will feature themes particular to Bechtle's renowned vernacular: serene compositions of parked cars and residential architecture, set in San Francisco and its environs. The quiet and precise interpretations of the urban and suburban outdoors are refined studies in light and shadow.
Robert Bechtle's painting came to prominence in the era and context of photo-realism. Nearly thirty years later his unique style, a combination of landscape and still life disciplines, was reevaluated in a touring retrospective exhibition organized in 2005 by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. The exhibition, The Painting of Modern Life, 2007 at the Hayward Gallery, London, further established his voice as major interpreter of urban realism.
Bechtle's work has been exhibited internationally and is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney and the Guggenheim Museums in New York, as well as the Walker Art Center, the Smithsonian Institution and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
