John Zurier - Paintings and Watercolors
John Zurier - Paintings and Watercolors
October 5 - 29, 2011
Reception: October 6, 5:30 - 7:30pm
Gallery Paule Anglim is pleased to present an exhibition of new paintings and watercolors by John Zurier.
This large presentation in both gallery spaces provides a broad view of Zurier's different treatments of scale. During his recent travels to Iceland and Spain, he produced a series of intimate works, open atmospheric washes of color on hand-made paper. These soft, abstract compositions play with light and color as experienced from the environments of sky and water.
Zurier's works on canvas address both intangible and physical properties of paintings. Essential to his compositions are decisions of substance: fabric weight and density, depth of stretcher, mounting, sizing as well as pigments and the raw materials from which they derive. More ethereal elements of light, movement, transparency and reflection are evoked through gestures conveying clouds, veils, smoke and objects as solid as hills. Observations in Japan and Iceland inform the experience he creates in these works.
The gallery's long relationship with the artist extends over 27 years. On the occasion of this ninth exhibition of Zurier's work the gallery has published REPEAT AFTER ME, a book of new poems by Bill Berkson, each accompanied by a watercolor image by Zurier.
John Zurier lives and works in Berkeley, CA and regularly exhibits his work in New York, Philadelphia and Spain. His paintings are represented in the collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Berkeley Art Museum, the Oakland Museum of California and the University of California. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2010 and exhibited in the 2008 Gwangju Biennial and the 2002 Whitney Biennial.
