Gallery Paule Anglim is pleased to announce its second exhibition of the works of Nayland Blake.

The exhibition will combine individual sculptural installations with large wall-mounted prints.  The sculptures will occupy the gallery space as objects in the realm between arranged retail display and reliquary monument.  Wall-mounted aluminum shelves and a central worktable will house compositions of found small objects:  wires, small chains, found jewelry.  The artist often collects random objects found during walks in the city.

Blake’s work continues to address desire and appetites, and the burden of engagement.  This investigation of personal freedoms includes the option to contrast and combine opposing cultural concepts.  Paying homage to artist heroes and cultural history, he gives equal time to more accessible references of TV and pop music culture.  He selects banks of knowledge accessible to many, yet perhaps holding other meanings to the marginalized.

Educated at Bard and Cal Arts, Nayland Blake lived in San Francisco early in his career, leaving an important impression on the arts community, and has taught here from time to time.  A recent small survey of Blake’s work, “Behavior” (at Location One in NY) reaffirmed the important place his work holds within the last two decades.
