John Roloff - Phantom Herd & Selected Works
John Roloff - Phantom Herd & Selected Works
June 15 – July 16, 2023
Opening Reception Thursday, June 16th from 5:30 – 7:30pm.
Gallery Paule Anglim is pleased to present an exhibition of recent works by John Roloff.
Roloff will exhibit work from his ongoing investigation of natural phenomena and geological change. In his imaginative conceptual discipline, the artist challenges our understanding of our planet’s history, calling attention to transformations and biological shifts, while allowing parallels to human cultural history.
Roloff will exhibit a sculptural model for a conceptual land intervention, Crossing Paths: Elk Tracings/ Phantom Herd, a rolling sculpture (resembling farm equipment) that leaves phantom elk tracks in the earth. A part of the sculptural exhibit, ‘Presidio Habitats’, the work intervened in the present-day park setting of the San Francisco Presidio.
Roloff has become known for his early outdoor kiln sculptures and time-based projects (1970’s to 90’s), and for installations addressing natural processes.
He first studied geology and plate tectonics at UC Davis, and then art with Robert Arneson and William T. Wiley. In over 30 years of his practice, Roloff has shown and completed on-site installations around the world, and exhibited at the Whitney Museum, SFMOMA, the Berkeley Art Museum and the Smithsonian Institution. He has received 3 visual arts fellowships from the NEA, a Guggenheim Foundation fellowship and a California Arts Council grant for visual artists. He is currently Professor of Sculpture at the San Francisco Art Institute.
