Gallery Paule Anglim is pleased to announce an exhibition featuring both early and recent works by Lynn Hershman Leeson.

 

Hershman's show will present new signature works enlisting new digital technology. Continuing her creative exploration of social constructs of identity, she presents Home Front a digital dollhouse and Alchemist Wand for the 21st Century, a sensor-driven broom that detects toxins.

 

A pioneer in conceptual art, Hershman has been an influential force for over 40 years, creating surrogate identities in photography, collage, drawings, performance, digital art and film. Her prophetic concerns of the past decades have been absorbed into art-critical debate: the relationship of humans to machines they created, and the real world to the imagined /virtual world,

 

The artist will also show again several works first presented in Berkeley in 1968, sound sculptures that are talking masks, activated by the viewer's presence. Ahead of their time, they gave an eerie personal face to a growing awareness of female consciousness.

 

Hershman has recently been the recipient of awards and recognition for her long career of innovation in new art forms. This late acknowledgement includes the Digital Art Museum's d.velop digital art award, the Flintridge Foundation Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Visual Arts, the Prix Ars Electronica, and grants from Creative Capital and the NEA.

 

Hershman's work is in the collections of New York's MoMA, the ZKM (Zentrum fur Kunst und Medientechnologie), the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Canada, the Walker Art Center, and the Berkeley Art Museum. Commissions include projects for the Tate Modern, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and Charles Schwab. In 2004 Stanford University Libraries acquired Hershman's archives.

 

W.A.R., Women Art Revolution will screen August 26th to Sept.1st at San Francisco's Lumiere Theater.
