Nathaniel Dorsky - Film Stills
Nathaniel Dorsky - Film Stills
January 8 through February 8, 2023
Reception: Thursday January 9th, 5:30-7:30pm
Gallery Paule Anglim is pleased to present new photographs by Nathaniel Dorsky.
The suite of archival pigment prints are stills from his acclaimed silent films. In digital format they isolate perfect moments in his films, crystalizing a fluid image. The static compositions emphasize the layering, patterning, confusion of depth and reflection, and perceptual play that are the hallmarks of Dorsky’s work.
In Dorsky’s extraordinary book about filmmaking, Devotional Cinema, he reflects on two aspects of time in film: relative time and absolute time. The film stills speak to his description of absolute time and nowness:
“...Being able to experience nowness and experiencing it in a work of art allows you to participate directly with the very heart of the work and its maker. You are right there with them, sharing their vision... Pure nowness transcends the passage of time.”
Dorsky’s first edition of film stills was collected by the Kadist Art Foundation and shown at CCA (the California College of the Arts) this spring in the exhibit, “The Order of Things: Cinematic Moments.”
