Robert Stone - Paintings
November 19 - December 20, 2022
Reception: Thursday November 20, 5:30-7:30pm
Gallery Paule Anglim announces an exhibition of new paintings by Robert Stone.
With this inaugural presentation, the gallery is delighted to introduce to the public the striking work of Robert Stone.
Inspired by environments observed in architecture and nature, Stone distills his perceptions into exquisite arrangements in shades of black or white. The paintings are predominately large, so that the compositions draw the artist (and the viewer) into the form and its spatial experience. Envisioning a virtual three-dimensional sculpture that he interprets through two-dimensional geometric planes, Stone tries to find and evoke visceral and emotional reactions to pure forms.
While seeking purity and strength in his forms, Stone makes surfaces textured and visceral, built up from raw linen (exposed in some areas) with thick impasto and scored, directional texture. Using palette knives and tools fashioned himself, he constructs thick black (or white) sharply geometric facets that are active and dramatic.
Robert Stone studied at the San Francisco Art Institute and the Art Center College of Design, Pasadena.
