INTRODUCTIONS 2003 July 9- August 7, 2023 Gallery Paule Anglim is pleased to present five new artists for this year's INTRODUCTIONS 2003 show: Brendan Lott, Sian Oblak, Joshua Podoll, Madison Smith & Philip Zimmerman. Brendan Lott will show a video work in which he arranged all the lines of dialogue from the Mike Nichols' film Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, alphabetically. Imposing a different structure on the actors' deliveries absurdly isolates the emotion and power of their performances. The main gallery space will feature the work of three painters: Sian Oblak, Joshua Podoll and Madison Smith. Sian Oblak graduated from CCAC's masters program after completing her BFA at St. Martin's in London. On a white ground, she plays with space and movement juxtaposing passages of pure painterly color with nearly representational drapery shapes. Joshua Podoll , a recent Bay Area transplant after finishing his MFA at the University of Iowa, floats a bubble of colorful out-of-focus pixels over a solid background, and in the next painting does the reverse. Madison Smith , newly matriculated MFA candidate from the San Francisco Art Institute, presents a series of serene small canvases that reverentially plot the growth of an ordinary potted seedling. In Gallery II Philip Zimmerman will present an installation of paintings, objects, drawings and furniture he has made and modified. The artist is interested in influences on history as it is recorded, examining both the obvious and subtle. Taking four events and three iconic images from the discovery of the New World and the Spanish conquest, he explores political and symbolic underpinnings. Gallery Paule Anglim is an active supporter of the INTRODUCTIONS program, having introduced artists such as John Beech, Enrique Chagoya, Vincent Fecteau, Noele Giulini, Melissa Pokorny, RIGO and Michelle Rollman to the community and beyond. INTRODUCTIONS 2003 is sponsored by the San Francisco Art Dealers Association. A reception for the artists will be held during the Introductions Artwalk on Saturday, July 12th from 11 - 5 p.m. at Gallery Paule Anglim.
