TERRY ALLEN Voidville and Brands November 3 -27, 2004 Gallery Paule Anglim is pleased to announce an exhibition of new work by Terry Allen. Since 1986 the gallery has presented the unique multi-media sculptural installations of this master of so many creative disciplines-- music, theater, film and fine art. Over a twenty-year period, and with critical acclaim, Terry Allen's artwork has been exhibited and collected internationally. He has toured his influential theatrical and musical performances in the US and Europe, and has released several renowned albums of his own music. Allen's legendary story-telling ability is key to his creative productivity. His modern folklore is skillfully drafted from historical events, personal memories, theater, song and iconic images from both American TV and the American landscape. Allen's underlying narratives give form to drawn images, sculptures, recordings, radio plays and video art. In his show at Gallery Paule Anglim, Allen will exhibit groups of framed drawings, some with free-standing sculptures. Addressing themes from the plays of Samuel Beckett, Allen's works operate within the author's trademark theater of bleak irony and the absurd. Terry Allen will also present a pair of super-sizedbranding irons that give extreme commentary to the notion of artist's mark-making and his/her impulse to "make a statement". Both the metal sculptures and their branded texts will be displayed. Terry Allen's artworks are represented in the collections of many international museums including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit, the Nelson/ Atkins Museum, Kansas City, Missouri, the San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art, La Jolla, the Los Angeles County Museum Of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, l'Espace Lyonnais d'Art Contemporain, Musee Saint Pierre, Lyon, France, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Dallas Museum of Art, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. A reception for the artist will be held on Thursday, November 4th from 5:30 to 7:30pm. | |
