MILDRED HOWARD / SIAN OBLAK
June 9 - July 3, 2023 ![]() In reference to the development of this work, Howard explains, "This ongoing inquiry is a metaphor for investing the concepts of knowing and not knowing, of memory, history and identity." Howard will install a number of small house constructions complementing public eye - private me. Composed of rows of tiny clear glass bottles mimicking tiles or shingles, these sculptures have a spiritual aspect. The enclosed space implies both reliquary and sanctuary - home as container for memories. Known for her sculptural installations and mixed media assemblage work, Mildred Howard has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the Adeline Kent Award from the San Francisco Art Institute and a fellowship from the California Arts Council. Her work has been exhibited internationally including recent shows in Cairo, Egypt and Bath, England, as well as Creative Time in New York, The New Museum in New York and galleries from Boston, Los Angeles, Atlanta and Santa Fe. Other commissions and installations were executed for the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, Washington, the San Francisco International Airport, the San Jose Museum of Art, and for inSITE San Diego. This, her first one-person exhibition in Gallery II will feature a group of small paintings and one large canvas. Oblak's new paintings are the elegant result of self-imposed restraints. With self-assurance, she navigates the restricted territory in which she defines her practice: "a specific palette of colors and a limited vocabulary of marks." Within this discipline Sian Oblak creates compositions in soft, nearly pastel hues that are essentially abstract while hinting at representation through passages of rendered drapery. Against a smooth almost white ground, she plays with space and movement juxtaposing static painterly color with flowing textile shapes. Studying drapery in classical painting the artist reinterprets information found within the rich variety of images from the Middle Ages through the Renaissance. Sian Oblak graduated from CCA's masters program after completing her BFA at St. Martin's in London. She lives and maintains her studio in the Bay Area. A reception for the artists will be held on Thursday, June 10th from 5:30 to 7:30pm. |
