Introducing: Victor Barbieri, Alexander Cheves and Jeong-Im Yi July 7 - 31, 2004 Gallery Paule Anglim is pleased to introduce the work of three new artists from the Bay Area's art community: Victor Barbieri, Alexander Cheves and Jeong-Im Yi. The main gallery will feature new sculpture and paintings by Alexander Cheves, and a group of new oil paintings by Jeong-Im Yi. Jeong-Im Yi recently graduated from the San Francisco Art Institute's masters program after completing Fine Arts degrees in Seoul, Korea. Her canvases, at first glance, appear to be gracefully textured, abstract white paintings. Upon closer examination, they reveal themselves to be deftly realistic, nearly to scale renderings of walls. The trompe l'oeil effect is reinforced by subtle areas depicting scraped drywall or a removed nail. Literal, yet ironic, they honestly address the life of a painting: covering up or displacing the wall. Alexander Cheves, a Central Valley native who did his undergraduate studies at California State University, Stanislaus, went east to Philadelphia for his Master of Fine Arts degree at The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. After returning to California his work focused on abstract readings of rural buildings and highway landscapes. For his presentation at the gallery, Cheves will show colorful paintings and small painted sculptures that borrow shapes and a familiar sobriety from conventional architecture. Please visit the artist's website at www.alexandercheves.com In Gallery II Victor Barbieri will present a group of single-channel video projections, all with the human figure as subject matter. Related to portraiture, Barbieri's videos examine the behavior and feelings of their human subjects. Although his models are given instructions or asked to perform actions, the artist does not encourage acting- he slows down his psychological portraits placing them in a separate reality defined by archetypal facial expressions or movements. Also recently matriculated from the San Francisco Art Institute's graduate program. Barbieri had previously studied film-making at San Francisco State University. Please visit the artist's website at www.victorbarbieri.com A reception for the artists will be held on Saturday afternoon, July 10th from 2 - 5 p.m. at Gallery Paule Anglim.
