SOLID CONCEPT V
March 9 - April 2, 2023

This, the fifth in the SOLID CONCEPT series, pays tribute to five artists, Terry Fox, David Ireland, Paul Kos, Tom Marioni and Alan Scarritt who, through their explorations into the essence of art making over the past thirty years, helped redefine the nature of the art experience.

The influential artists featured in the SOLID CONCEPT exhibitions mounted at Gallery Paule Anglim over the past seventeen years have guided artists pursuing the fundamentals of Conceptual Art. Terry Fox, David Ireland, Paul Kos, Tom Marioni and Alan Scarritt all exposed their art practice to experimentation in post-60's San Francisco. To this day, their activity is characterized by openness, challenge and relevance. By the early 1970's social reform had brought politics into the studio. New definitions they sought were more about allowances than exclusions, and working as conceptual artists meant different things to each. No longer limited by the studio practices of drawing, painting and sculpture-the artists invited video, performance, communication technology, and building materials into a permissive repertoire.

Both David Ireland and Paul Kos were recently recognized with traveling survey exhibitions. Everything Matters (Paul Kos) and The Way Things Are (David Ireland) were accompanied by catalogs, available through the gallery. In 2003 Terry Fox's work was featured in a retrospective exhibition (Re/De) Constructions & c. at the Kunsthalle Fridericianum in Kassel. Tom Marioni's work will be presented in an exhibition curated by the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati in 2006.

A reception for the artists will be held Wednesday, March 9th from 5:30- 7:30 p.m. at Gallery Paule Anglim.
