LEO BERSAMINA
January 4 - 28, 2006

Gallery Paule Anglim is pleased to announce an exhibition of new works by LEO BERSAMINA.

The artist will present new works in a variety of media and will feature a group of drawings based on information he has gathered from many houses he has lived in.

In earlier bodies of work Bersamina has played with imagery from his personal history and with signifiers of cultural identity. Bersamina's treatments of these subjects have an unexpected formal and abstract structure, and incorporate both painting and photography. With a built-in layer of irony, they are highly inventive representations of history and memory. For example, an earlier abstract painting with a repeating florid pattern was based on a street map of his childhood paper route.

Reflecting on his newest work, Bersamina offers this introduction:
"I am an ardent observer of life's visual rhythms and feel compelled to try to articulate them in my work"

A reception for the artist will be held Thursday, January 5th from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.

JESSE SIMON
January 4 - 28, 2006

Gallery Paule Anglim is pleased to announce an exhibition of new works by JESSE SIMON.

Showing for the first time at Gallery Paule Anglim the artist will present works in a signature technique using broken and discarded surfboards.

Simon's early work was chosen for the SITE Sante Fe Biennial curated by Dave Hickey, Beau Monde. As a graffiti artist, together with Gajin Fujita and Alex Kizu, he created a huge mural on the SITE building.

His new compositions are experienced as both sculpture and painting. The deceptive bulk of the fiberglass and resin is reminiscent of bone and marble, giving the shapes presence and impled weight. The surface luminosity plays with the reflective and absorptive properties of wax painting.

Simon received his BFA from the California College of Arts and Crafts in 1996, and his MFA from Hunter College in 2001.

A reception for the artist will be held Thursday, January 5th from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.
