JOHN ROLOFF
Recent Objects/Images/Projects
February 1 - 25, 2006

Gallery Paule Anglim is pleased to announce an exhibition of new works by JOHN ROLOFF.

The artist will present new works in several formats linking conceptual and metaphorical imagery. For many years the artist has examined geological change and the forces behind biological shifts in our planet's history. Roloff's work builds an awareness of transformations on and beneath the earth's surface, while addressing parallels in the history of human interactions.

Roloff will use photography and sculpture to tie together images of power as manipulated and channeled through shapes, vessels and tools.

The artist has recently completed several public art commissions adapting specific elements of a site's geography or geological history. In Seattle he devised a garden built underneath an overpass of Interstate 5 with timed artificial lighting and rain supporting a living environment complete with programmed seasonal changes. A reception for the artist will be held Thursday, February 2nd from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.

ALA EBTEKAR
Emergence: Elements
February 1 - 25, 2006

Gallery Paule Anglim is pleased to announce an exhibition of new works by ALA EBTEKAR.

Ala Ebtekar will show new figurative drawings rooted in antique photography from Iran. The artist adapts images from Iranian gymnasium poses revisiting the images with a contemporary viewpoint and inviting comparisons with today's hip hop culture and its idiomatic gestures and poses.

Born in the United States to Iranian parents, the artist was raised in both Iran and the U.S. As a young teenager he joined the K.O.S. (Kids of Survival), working with artist Tim Rollins in collaborative artworks involving groups of urban youth. He received his B.A. from the San Francisco Art Institute and, while finishing his MFA degree at Stanford this year, he has been exhibiting in the U.S. and abroad. He is currently preparing for a show at the Asian Art Center in New York in the Fall 2006.

Other new work by Ala Ebtekar will be featured in a concurrent exhibition at the Richmond Art Center, opening late January 2006. In this site-specific presentation the artist will paint on the walls and show 3-D elements, carrying over themes and the spirit of his well-received exhibition in France, Do'Ka, at La Condition Publique de Roubaix, addressing the arts of the Diaspora of Middle East and North Africa.

A reception for the artist will be held Thursday, February 2nd from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.
