SHIRLEY SHOR March 1 - April 1, 2023 Gallery Paule Anglim is pleased to announce an exhibition of new works by SHIRLEY SHOR. For this solo exhibition, the artist will present new works in real time digital media: moving imagery written in computer code. Shor has received acclaim for her colorful, infinitely evolving computer-driven shapes, shown on screens imbedded in sculpture or as projections on sculptural forms. "In my work, I think about space as a verb, as an action, as a dynamic process that we are all taking part in. I recreate space by constantly changing it. I do so by injecting real time virtual elements into physical space and physical objects. The raw moments are a synthesis between the code and the territory." Her work Landslide 2004, purchased by the Berkeley Art Museum, will soon be featured in a newly curated installation of their permanent collection: A Measure of Time: American Art 1900 to the present (February 22, 2023 January 2007). In 2004 her work presented at the Orange County Biennial (where she showed both at the Orange County Museum and its new media gallery, the Orange Lounge) was a popular and critical hit. Shor's work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. Recent shows include RAM, Rotterdam, the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts San Francisco, SF Camerawork, San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery, Ars Electronica, Linz, Austria and Herzliya Museum of Art, Israel. She received the 2003 Bay Area Murphy Award in fine arts. Shor got her BA in Art History and Philosophy from the Tel-Aviv University, and MFA in Conceptual Information Art from San Francisco State University. An MFA graduate of San Francisco State, she currently maintains her studio in San Francisco. A reception for the artist will be held on Thursday, March 2nd from 5:30 to 7:30pm. For his first exhibition at Gallery Paule Anglim Keith Hale will present a body of work of exceptional precision and mastery of traditional painting methods. The exhibition in Gallery II will feature several virtuoso paintings created by juxtaposing water-color and oil painting techniques. The artist prepares sections of the canvas differently to receive the two media. His imagery floats figures before a backdrop of the galaxy: for example one painting positions the faces of a Texan boys choir above a lunar landscape. In my current work I've used contemporary astrophotography as a reference and context. In addition to providing a playground for figure/ground experiments; this has given me the opportunity to reflect on the role of landscape in art. Keith Hale obtained both his BFA and MFA degrees from the San Francisco State Art Institute where he has also taught. He currently maintains his studio in San Francisco. A reception for the artist will be held on Thursday, March 2nd from 5:30 to 7:30pm.
