Jesse Simon’s early work was chosen for the SITE Sante Fe Biennial curated by Dave Hickey, "Beau Monde". As a graffiti artist, together with Gajin Fujita and Alex Kizu, he created a huge mural on the SITE building.
His new compositions created from broken and discarded surfboards are experienced as both sculpture and painting. The deceptive bulk of the fiberglass and resin is reminiscent of bone and marble, giving the shapes presence and impled weight. The surface luminosity plays with the reflective and absorptive properties of wax painting.
Simon received his BFA from the California College of Arts and Crafts in 1996, and his MFA from Hunter College in 2001.
